Abstract
Acute suppurative thyroiditis or thyroid abscess is a rare clinical disorder. A rich blood supply, a generous lymphatic drainage, a high iodine level that inhibits bacterial growth, and a complete, protective capsule are factors that have been considered to contribute the relatively high resistance of the thyroid gland to infection. Congenital pyriform sinus fistula, probably a remnant of the third or fourth branchial cleft has recently been recognized as a underlying cause of acute suppurative thyroiditis or thyroid abscess. I present a case of thyroid abscess and perithyroid abscess with pyriform sinus fistula, diagnosed by esophagography.
